Learning to weather the storm: Participants of Ali’s sailing program gaining practical experience of life at sea.
MALAYSIA has become more of a home than Turkey for Ali Engin Senyuva, who has been residing here for 19 years. Ali, who is from Istanbul, first came to Malaysia when he was attached to the Turkish Embassy as defense adviser to the ambassador. Over the years, Ali and his wife, Nilufer, have become very much Malaysians and love being here. Except for an annual trip home to visit his parents, the 60-year-old former navy captain said he and his wife were very comfortable being here and it was their second home. The couple’s second child was born here. What can I do in Malaysia as a Second Homer?

Sailing through: Ali has made Malaysia his second home and is now busy establishing his business locally.
Ali said his 18-year-old daughter was born in Malaysia and was studying in an international school here while his son, who is 28, was studying and working in Canada. He said there was nothing to complain about Malaysia, although the humidity could be unbearable at times. “We love the food here so much and my family has become used to eating rice as a staple food, compared to the bread we would eat in Turkey. We are okay with Indian food and we like Chinese dishes as well,” he said.

Food aside, Ali said the people here were friendly and most of their friends were locals although they live in a community with a substantial number of foreigners. Although most people his age would be enjoying their retirement, Ali said he had very little time for a hobby as he was busy trying to establish his business in Malaysia. Coming from a naval background, Ali’s love for the sea has led him to venture into the sailing industry. He started a sailing school with a Malaysian friend. He said the school, based in Pulau Indah in Port Klang, conducts courses that would lead to obtaining a sailing license. “We cater to those who wish to take up sailing for leisure as well as others who are interested in the activity as a sport.” A lot of the time when he’s not home, Ali can be found on his yacht that has three bedrooms and a kitchen. He has certainly sailed through all kinds of weather. “The sea can be calm or moderate one moment and stormy the next. For a sailor, the most important element is the wind; it is vital in ensuring the mobility of a yacht,” he said. Just like life’s challenges are different for every individual, Ali said the experience of sailing would not always be the same for people. “It all depends on the sea and weather conditions,” he said. And just like overcoming life’s challenges can leave you feeling empowered, surviving a storm at sea will surely be an equally intense affair. What can I do as a Second Homer?
